OVERVIEW

ProStart is a 2-year hospitality management and culinary arts curriculum designed to give students real-world experience in the classroom. It is a National Restaurant Association program currently in all 50 states as well as 3 territories. The program currently has 140,000 students enrolled in over 1800 schools and is continuously growing.

New Jersey currently has over 1,900 students and counting enrolled in ProStart. You can see the best of these students show off their skills at the 11th Annual ProStart Invitational at the Culinary Conference Center at Hudson County Community College in the heart of Jersey City. The competition will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The Culinary Arts competition will be held in the main banquet room. Students competing in culinary must complete a 3-course meal in 1 hour using no electricity. They will be judged on sanitation, taste, skills, teamwork, menus, and recipes.

Then, upstairs in the awards area, management students will be pitching their businesses to investors at a trade show. The management students will be judged on their concept, marketing, budgets, operations, and planning.

Students are competing for scholarships, as well as the opportunity to compete at the National ProStart Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina in April.

There is a parking garage across the street from the college. There is also parking throughout Jersey City. Guests and parents should be prepared to pay for parking.

LUNCH TICKETS


Boxed lunches will be provided to competing student teams, team instructors, judges, and volunteers only. Lunches will include a lunch meat sandwich, chips, cookie, water, and juice box.

Parents and guests may purchase a lunch ticket for $15.00 prior to February 17, 2017 by visiting the link above, or by phone at (800) 848-6368. NO LUNCH TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR.

Jersey City has plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. Parents and guests are encouraged to explore the city while at the competition.


RULES

Competition rules state that students may not speak to or engage in any contact with spectators during competition or risk a team disqualification. Please refrain from speaking to your child until he or she has completed the competition.


THINGS TO NOTE…

As of now, all ServSafe Certified ProStart completers in the state of New Jersey are entitled to 3 college credits from Hudson County Community College! In addition, Monroe College offers an exclusive renewable scholarship to NJ ProStart Students of $24,000 per year, totaling $96,000. The NJREF Scholarship Applications are being accepted until May 1, 2017. NRAEF Scholarships are also available until June, 2017 on the NRAEF website.
